Mappa Mundi: She Stoops to Conquer

Directed by Peter Doran

Mappa Mundi’s new production of Oliver Goldsmith’s groundbreaking 18th Century farce follows their recent successes with The Importance of Being Earnest, Moll Flanders and Canterbury Tales.

Two foppish suitors travelling to a country manor house are tricked into believing it to be a tavern in a practical joke played by the irresponsible and irrepressible Tony Lumpkin. Upon arrival the dandies treat their host, the long-suffering Mr Hardcastle, like an innkeeper. But this works to the advantage of his pretty and intelligent daughter Kate, who cleverly disguises herself as a bar-maid in order to win the heart of her disastrously tongue-tied suitor.

With an outrageous mix of secret elopements and nocturnal confusions, this comedy of manners sports witty dialogue, cutting humour and big wigs! A ribald and hilarious portrait of life and love in the town and country with mistaken identities, acts of blatant greed, selfishness and plain stupidity, all perfect fodder for Mappa Mundi’s satirical style. Cult Welsh theatre company Mappa Mundi have built a reputation for gloriously irreverent, populist and accessible adaptations of classic theatrical and literary works and you can expect an original and flamboyant take on Goldsmith’s classic social comedy. For their fourth co-production with Theatr Mwldan, Mappa Mundi are joined by the Torch Theatre, and their Artistic Director Peter Doran in the Directors chair.
