All That Is Solid celebrates and confounds expectations of animation, bringing together fifteen international short films that use methods such as hand-drawn on paper, risograph, stop motion and 3D. Themes range from intimate personal stories to global issues, including the invasion of Ukraine and the COVID-19 pandemic, reflecting on home, connection and nature. The screening is followed by a live Q&A with Welsh director Aliyah Harfoot, talking about her film Liminal Roots. She combines stop motion, hand-drawn and paper cut-out techniques with intuition and spontaneity.
  • Content warning: Some of the films deal with issues that may be sensitive or distressing to some viewers and may not be suitable for children.
  • The screening is followed by a live Q&A with Welsh director Aliyah Harfoot and Gary Thomas director of Animate Projects, an arts organisation with a focus on experimental animation practice. They will be discussing Aliyah’s film Liminal Roots which is featured in the programme.
Theatr Mwldan Film Society present:
Land and Freedom Film Festival
Special guests will appear for post screening Q&As as well as post film discussions for audiences. We hope the films stimulate and provoke visions of what 'land and freedom' might look like.
The inaugural TMFS Festival Weekend explores the themes of ‘Land and Freedom’. The power of cinema to transport us across the globe and to bring us stories from afar is testament to the place storytelling has in our lives. The selected films range from Mesopotamia to Kenya; deep time from the perspective of a solitary tree; conflict over the very ground we stand on; and an anthology of international animation shorts.
• 'Land + Freedom' Film Festival Weekend Pass - £15
The Film Festival Weekend Pass (Feb 6–8) costs £15 per person, and gives you access to all five screenings over that weekend.
Without a Film Festival pass: Each screening costs £4 per person.
Members: TMFS Full Membership and Ticketsaver cards are accepted as usual.
