HAPPY-GO-LUCKY

The wonderful British director Mike Leigh returns with his latest film, a comedy-drama whose central character Poppy (an award-winning performance by Sally Hawkins) is genuinely happy! Though in a much lighter register than most Leigh films, Happy-Go-Lucky is as psychologically and dramatically rich as ever, and may prove to be his most likeable and popular yet. Poppy is an irrepressibly good-humoured London primary school teacher, who has a gift for making the most of life, whether it's clubbing with her moody sister Suzy or researching bird life for the classroom. Committed and compassionate, Poppy knows just how to intervene to help one of her young pupils, and thereby hits it off with simpatico social worker Tim.

IN BRUGES

Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson star in this hit-man comedy. Following a botched hit in London, Irish contract killers, Ray and Ken are sent to the quaint Belgian town of Bruges and told to wait for further instructions from their employer, Harry (Ralph Fiennes). While Ken takes in the sights, Ray is morose and withdrawn, disgruntled with Bruges' lack of nightlife and wracked with guilt. Soon Ray meets Chloë, a drug-dealing coquette who supplies the cast on a local film set that includes dope-addled dwarf actor (the hilarious Peter Dinklage). Packed with oddballs, quirkiness and a bizarre landscape populated by freaks, this is a great movie debut from playwright McDonagh (The Beauty Queen Of Leenane).
