This policy should be considered within the overall context of
Theatr Mwldan’s Programming Policy

Introduction
Theatr Mwldan is an arts and entertainment venue of strategic importance within Wales. Its activities reflect the complex nature of a new, multi-faceted Wales within the wider world whilst recognising the diversity of the community it serves and a local and national cultural and linguistic heritage. Theatr Mwldan celebrates its Welsh identity which is rooted in that heritage yet also embraces a diverse, open and outward-looking nation.

Theatr Mwldan’s Visual Arts Policy must reflect this identity, and reinforces a set of commonly held fundamental beliefs and values such as inclusivity, tolerance, freedom of expression, equal opportunities and cultural diversity. These beliefs are shared by the Board and the staff of the Theatr Mwldan, and further define Oriel Mwldan’s fundamental identity.

Visual Arts activity at Theatr Mwldan is delivered primarily through a new gallery facility, Oriel Mwldan, which has been constructed as part of the Theatr Mwldan Development Project.

The main aims of the policy are:

• To recognise the equal importance of the visual arts and crafts within the overall programming of Theatr Mwldan.

• To develop a clear identity for visual arts activity and deliver an exhibition programme of high quality in order to achieve a reputation for excellence.

• To present touring exhibitions of national and international significance within existing constraints.

• To provide exhibition opportunities for local professional and amateur artists, makers and photographers, including those in the early stages of their careers.

• To encourage maximum public access to exhibitions, aiming to provide this access free of charge.

• To provide educational opportunities related to the visual arts wherever possible by liaison with local schools, colleges, artists and members of the public over the provision of talks, demonstrations, workshops and, where appropriate, residencies.

• To celebrate the rich cultural diversity of Wales, both locally and nationally.

• To originate and produce exhibitions, work and projects for exhibition within Oriel Mwldan and for touring to other venues.

• To recognise the links between visual arts and other artforms presented at Theatr Mwldan.

• To develop and realise the creative opportunites for visual arts development afforded by the close working relationship between Theatr Mwldan and Creative Mwldan Creadigidol.

• To relate exhibitions to events and festivals, both locally and nationally.

• To market and publicise all exhibitions and activities of Oriel Mwldan to as wide an audience as possible.

• To further develop the marketing of the visual arts at Mwldan and to maximise the sales and revenue earning potential of Oriel Mwldan.

• To source appropriate funding to enable delivery of policy aims.
