Person Statement
I was born in a mining village in Leicestershire (1944). I studied
sculpture at Edinburgh College of Art under Eric Schilsky R.A. I
was diagnosed with Friedreich’s ataxia that eventually put
me in a wheelchair, making sculpture impossible. I had exhibited
sculpture in R.S.A gallery in Edinburgh, winning the Keith prize;
also prize winner in an Arts Council international competition in
Holland.
In the 80’s a photographer friend let me try his camera and
from then on I never stopped!
I have exhibited in Worksop, Huddersfield and Nottingham; pictures
published in newspapers and B&W photos for the book ‘Classic
touring routes in Scotland’. The portraits carry on from my
sculpture interests, the industrial subjects come, I suppose, from
my childhood surroundings, landscape has always been a challenge
to the B&W photographer, and I just love India.
We moved to Wales a few years ago where the light and rocky coastline
inspired me to again start sculpture after a gap of 25 years.
All the visual arts speak a similar language. It’s the message-not
the media-that’s important.
