Midland Gothic
Monday 2 May - Thursday 2 June 2005
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
I studied graphic design at Wolverhampton University but have alway
been keen on the various disciplines outside of that field. After
working in Birmingham and Rotterdam as a designer, I now manage
a small design studio in North West London and continue to make
my art/ design projects as well as developing my interest in audio
work. I am currently studying part-time at Central St Martins.
Midland Gothic is a body of work that came into being during my
final year at University. In it I compare and contrast the films
Deliverance (John Boorman) and Southern Comfort (Walter Hill). I
felt compelled to add a visual element to my thesis whereupon I
created Midland Gothic. I took photos of various woods throughout
the greater midlands that echoed the look and feel of the two films.
Like the films, the photos play on the primevil fear of the woods
and the isolation of such places. In them one has the sense that
something has happened or is about to happen.
I felt inspired by these two films to illustrate my belief that
'Ugly is Beautiful', and to portray the desolate landscape as picturesque
