The Ceredigion Coastal Path
Saturday 7 July – Saturday 11 August 2007
Ian Phillips
Each picture begins as I walk with my sketchbook looking for colourful patterns and strong simple shapes that capture my attention. This I record as a black and white line drawing with notes on colour and atmosphere. Using this drawing as the basis for my lino prints I attempt to distill a place to its essence whilst retaining some topographical and seasonal accuracy.
Walking and drawing along the Ceredigion coastal path as the late autumn light faded to winter was a real joy. The contrast between slow moving clouds, still fields and cliffs on the left against the movement and changing colours of the sea below was endlessly fascinating. I worked hard to catch this mood of impermanence and variablity within this series of lino prints.
Through looking at my prints and the information supplied with them I hope to encourage viewers to seek out and explore the colours and patterns of the beautiful spaces I walked through for themselves.
