Cardigan Art Society
Summer Show 2008
5 July – 2 August 2008

History
Cardigan Art Society was founded in the early sixties by a group
of enthusiasts led by Francis Mason who wanted to arrange a biannual
art exhibition in the town for people of all abilities, both amateur
and professional, who wished to exhibit their work. This tradition
has been maintained over the years and Cardigan Art Society has
presented exhibitions at a variety of venues including Saint Mary’s
Church school, a haberdashery shop and an ex scout hut.
Cardigan
Theatre, the town’s amateur drama group, began a project
to convert the town's disused abattoir into a community theatre.
This was a wonderful opportunity for members of Cardigan Art Society
and the group became involved, provided funding for an exhibition
space within the building.
In 1995 an ambitious Development Project
was launched to convert and extend the existing theatre into a
larger venue. Theatr Mwldan launched its new gallery facility,
Oriel Mwldan in 2004. It is designed to accommodate a programme
of professional, touring and community exhibitions.
Cardigan Art
Society is included in Oriel Mwldan’s programme on an annual
basis in recognition of the society’s support, commitment
to the community and to the visual arts. Currently the society
enjoys a membership of increasing diversity that reveals the artistic
achievement attainable within the local community.
The society
welcomes new members on an egalitarian basis and regardless of
technical ability. With a comprehensive programme of talks, demonstrations
and workshops, there are opportunities to develop skills and encouraging
support is always at hand. Such a broad spectrum of artistic styles
and techniques promises something of interest for everyone.
