Cardigan Art Society
Summer Exhibition 2006
Monday 3 July - Wednesday 26 July 2006
History
Cardigan Art Society was founded in the early sixties by a group
of enthusiasts who wanted to arrange a biannual art exhibition in
the town for people of all abilities both amateur and professional,
who wished to exhibit their work.
One of the founders was the then Mayor of Cardigan Francis Mason
and it was her intention that anyone who wanted to exhibit their
work, no matter how good or bad should have the right to do so.
This tradition has been maintained which means that the standard
of work covers a broad range of skills. It also reveals the artistic
achievement attainable within a local community.
Early exhibitions were held firstly in Saint Mary’s Church
school, then in Bon Marche haberdashery shop and finally in an ex
scout hut kindly purchased for the society by two of the members.
It was not an ideal exhibition space.
Another founder member was the now well known local artist Aneurin
Jones. He was the first chairman and later president. He still holds
that office.
When the Theatr Mwldan first came into existence the society was
heavily involved in its formation and provided all equipment for
the art exhibition space. Members also helped to make a great deal
of the theatre equipment .As a result CAS earned the right to hold
two shows a year in the theatre.
During the rebuilding of the theatre CAS exhibitions were held in
the Guildhall. It now returns to the much improved Oriel Mwldan
and is delighted to be back home.
With such a broad spectrum of artistic styles and techniques on
view there should be something to interest everyone.
