YOUTH INFORMATION & SUPPORT SERVICE

The Cardigan Youth Project, known as Area 43, an Information and Support Service, is a registered charity set up to give help and support to all young people in the rural counties of Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire. The Project is monitored by a voluntary management committee established in 1996 made up of representatives from the local community. Area 43 opened full-time at the beginning of September 1997 now has three full time and three part time project workers and a team of between 25-30 volunteers

The Project has tried to react in a positive way to the specialised needs of the 16-25 year old age group. It’s philosophy is geared to supporting young people develop self esteem and a positive approach to their lives and their place in society by providing them with opportunities for direct experiences. It also provides a space where they can relate to their peer group and to adult role models who will encourage them to participate in the learning processes and decision making structures which effect their lives, the lives of those around them and of the community within which they live. It is hoped this will enable them to understand and act on those issues. We offer an all age guidance and a mentoring service. We are also committed to forging links and representing the needs and aspirations of young people within the community and also with the various agencies and service providers in the youth work field.

Our premises at 1 Pont y Cleifion were purchased and renovated specifically for the Drop-In & Information Centre. We are currently in the middle of a building project (funded by WAG) to increase the size our premises and develop the range of services we can offer.

As an independent registered charity we rely on the support and goodwill of our local community and volunteers, funding bodies, businesses, training organisations, local and county councils, educational establishments and all parties interested in youth issues. We wish to encourage communication and networking and as such the project has an open-door policy and welcomes the opportunity to talk about our work and develop pro-active relationships
